Understanding and Predicting Storm Impacts

Repeated attacks by hurricane waves and surge have taken a toll on Dauphin Island, Alabama, carving a breach in the narrow island, toppling beachfront homes, and eroding large stretches of coast. The yellow arrow in each image points to the same feature. The view is looking west along Dauphin Island toward an inlet cut during Hurricane Katrina. [larger version]

Hurricanes, nor'easters, and Pacific winter storms are powerful events that generate dangerous waves and surge capable of moving large amounts of sand, destroying buildings and infrastructure, and even taking lives. Through processes like dune erosion, overwash, and inundation, storms reshape our nation's coastline. The storm component of NACCH focuses on understanding the magnitude and variability of extreme storm impacts on sandy beaches. The overall objective is to improve the methods used to assess the vulnerability of the nation's coast to extreme storms and reliably predict coastal changes resulting from specific storms.
